What is Refer and Earn?
It is an incentive to encourage our existing customers to refer potential (new) customers to use Mukuru products and services. The Referral program rewards both the referrer and the referee (new customer) with incentives when there is an active campaign.
Who is the Referrer?
A Referrer is a person who refers another friend, family member or acquaintances to sign up to Mukuru to use our services or products. In this context the Referrer is an existing Mukuru customer.
How does Refer and Earn work?
- An existing Mukuru customer (Referrer) refers a friend via WhatsApp or USSD, that is currently not signed up with Mukuru. The referrer then generates a referral link which they can share with the friend, the friend must use the same referral link with a code to sign up with Mukuru on WhatsApp.
- The referee must upload their documents, get successfully verified and create an order of a minimum of R500 on their first order to receive a discount of up to R100.
- The referrer either receives R100 airtime or R100 loaded onto their Mukuru Card, once the customer has been successfully verified.
Which Incentive does a customer get?
- If a Referrer has an active Mukuru Card, then they automatically get R100 into their Mukuru Card.
- If a Referrer is a non Mukuru Card customer then they will receive the R100 airtime incentive The referrer DOES NOT choose an incentive, we automatically give them an incentive dependent on the above criteria.
How much is the incentive?
- The Referrer will either receive:
- R100 Airtime OR
- R100 loaded into their Mukuru Card
Who can be referred?
- Refer and Earn is ONLY available in South Africa AND ONLY individuals with a valid South African mobile number can be referred.
- The friend must have not signed up with Mukuru yet.
From which channels can I refer my friend(s)?
- USSD
Why Didn’t I get my incentive?
The criteria for Refer and Earn is, and all these MUST be met:
- A referee must not have been a Mukuru customer prior to them being referred
- referee MUST sign up on WhatsApp
- Upload their KYC documents on WhatsApp (or by a consultant)
- referee MUST create an order of R500 or more on their first order.
- The order must be completed
Also confirm that there is a Refer and Earn Campaign running
How do I know that I should have received an incentive?
You will receive a WhatsApp message from Mukuru to inform you that you’ll be getting an incentive.
How do I get my referral link?
You can get your referral link on WhatsApp by following the below steps:
Step 1. Select “Refer and Earn
Step 2. Read up on the Refer and Earn process which will be displayed in front of you with an image
Step 3. Select the “continue” button
Step 4. Confirm the number you would like to receive your airtime incentive
Step 5. Select the “Get my link” button
Step 6. Click on “continue” and your referral link and message will be sent to you so you can spread the Mukuru love with your friends and family!
What is the difference between “Refer and Earn” and “Refer a Friend”
Update with Refer and Earn - customers can now earn R100 directly onto their Mukuru card. The “Refer and Earn” programme replaces the old “Refer a Friend” campaign. The “Refer and Earn” programme follows the same process to refer a friend, the friend signs up for Mukuru, sends R500 or more and they qualify for R100 off their first send and the referrer get R100 deposited into their card. If the customer does not have a card, they still get the R100 airtime.
How many people can I refer?
As many people as possible! ☺
Why have I have not received my airtime?
There could be 2 reasons why you didn’t receive your airtime:
- You might have chosen a different number for the airtime to be loaded onto
- The full criteria of the Refer and Earn programme has not been met.

- Referee MUST create an order of R500 or more on their first order
- The order must be completed

How do I get my discount as the friend who was referred?
Upon successful sign up and verification of documents, you must create the first order of R500 or more for the discount to reflect.
How does my friend or family member who I referred for the Refer and Earn programme get their R100 discount?
Upon successful sign up and verification of documents, the friend or family member you referred must create the first order of R500 or more for their R100 discount to reflect.
Do I as the referrer need to be on a specific KYC level?
No, the referrer does not have to be on a specific KYC level. Any Mukuru customer in South Africa on Lite, Core or Max can refer a friend.
On what channels can the friend sign up on?
The friend that has been referred can ONLY sign up on WhatsApp for now BECAUSE we need them to upload their documents (Legal document and selfie).
I (Referrer) didn’t get my SMS with my link
- Please check your SMSes to see if you did not get an SMS from Mukuru.
- Confirm the Number you used to generate your link on USSD – the number used will be the number that the SMS will be sent to
If there is currently no campaign running for Refer and Earn, what happens when the customer clicks on the menu item on WhatsApp or USSD?
When customers refer their friends – they will be able to do so with the same process and flow, BUT there will be no incentive attached to referring their friends.
